Shelby Democrats Book Group

January 13, 2026 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Our next meeting is Tuesday, January 13, 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm, via ZOOM.

If you are not on our email list but would like to attend, please contact Brenda Harris at addiesgranna@gmail.com.

Our January book is “The Last Slave Ship: The True Story of How Clotilda Was Found, Her Descendants, and an Extraordinary Reckoning” by Ben Raines.  It is the incredible true story of the last ship to carry enslaved people to America, the remarkable town its survivors founded after emancipation, and the complicated legacy their descendants carry with them to this day, written by the journalist who discovered the ship’s remains.  Cheryl Olin will lead the discussion.

Looking ahead to February, we will be reading “Coming Up Short: A Memoir of My America” by Robert B. Reich. From political economist, cabinet member, beloved professor, media presence, and bestselling author of Saving Capitalism and The Common Good, a deeply felt, compelling memoir of growing up in a baby-boom America that made progress in certain areas, fell short in so many important ways, and still has lots of work to do.
