Shelby Democrats Book Group
March 11 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
Our next meeting is Tuesday, March 11, via ZOOM. The zoom opens at 6:00 pm for anyone who wants general conversation time. We’ll start the book discussion at 6:30 pm and end on time at 8:00 pm.
Anyone who wishes to join can sign up by contacting Brenda Harris at addiesgranna@gmail.com.
Our March book is “James: A Novel” by Percival Everette. The book reimagines the escape of “Jim” in Mark Twain’s “Huckleberry Finn” as told from the enslaved man’s point of view. “Brilliant, harrowing, action-packed, and darkly humorous.” Brenda Harris will lead.
In April, we’ll be reading “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr, a NYT best seller and banned book about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Interweaving the lives of Marie-Laure and Werner, Doerr illuminates the ways, against all odds, people try to be good to one another. Janet Fisher will lead.
Our group of Democratic readers have developed a list of on-line news resources that may serve us better than corporate news. They suggest The Contrarian, Democracy2025, Chop Wood Carry Water, Civil Discourse, and Democracy Docket. Please check them out!
